What Tamoxifen Citrate is
Tamoxifen Citrate, marketed historically as "Nolvadex," is a triphenylethylene selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) and the gold-standard endocrine treatment for hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer. In bodybuilding, it is the second pillar of SERM-based post-cycle therapy and the standard treatment for early-stage gynecomastia.
Pharmacology and kinetics
Plasma half-life of tamoxifen and its active metabolite 4-hydroxytamoxifen is approximately 5–7 days, with steady-state reached after about a week of dosing. Like clomiphene, it antagonises estrogen feedback at the hypothalamus, restoring LH and FSH release after anabolic-induced suppression. Unlike clomiphene, it is also a strong antagonist at breast tissue, which is why it is the first choice for treating gyno.
Where it fits in a cycle
Standard tamoxifen PCT is 40 mg per day for weeks 1–2 and 20 mg per day for weeks 3–4, often combined with clomiphene. Tamoxifen is also the on-cycle treatment of choice for early-stage gynecomastia symptoms (itchy, sensitive nipple tissue) — 20 mg per day usually resolves the issue if started early. Like clomiphene, PCT timing depends on which ester finished the cycle.
What to expect
Restored LH, FSH and endogenous testosterone within 2–4 weeks of starting PCT, along with regression of any early gynecomastia tissue. Side effects are generally mild — mood changes, occasional hot flashes, rare visual disturbance. Tamoxifen mildly raises IGF-1, which is part of why bodybuilders prefer it to clomiphene-only PCT.
